The Importance of Being Grounded

We hear about it all of the time.  Become grounded by imagining roots coming from your feet, spreading out into Mother Earth.  It sounds wonderful, but honestly, it is not how it works.

Many people are a bit perplexed with the notion of being rooted to the Earth like a tree.  Part of the problem is that you might feel too rooted, and become stuck.  The Earth is fluid, moving and dynamic.

If I may, I would like to give you a different idea of how, and perhaps most importantly, why, you should be grounded.

The term “grounded” literally means the ability to be connected to the ground, to Mother Earth, to an incredibly powerful source of Living Energy.  You know it when you are grounded. You can think clearly.  You have less body aches.  Your emotions are stable, and you stop reacting to all of the chaos around you.  Those are very important benefits of being grounded.

The most important aspect, however, is your health.  That’s right!  You are healthier…Body, Mind, Spirit and Emotions…when you are grounded.

As an Energy Healer and educator, it is essential to understand grounding.  It is one of the first things that I teach the medical students that I work with.  It is also the first thing that I teach my clients and students…. for one simple reason.  If you are not grounded, you are not as effective as you could be.

Most people do not realize that there are chakras all over the body.  Think of the Chakra System like an organ system.  If you were to consider the circulatory system, you would not just think of the heart.  You need to have a means of distribution of blood throughout the body so therefore we need arteries, veins and capillaries.  These vital parts of the circulatory system allow for distribution of healthy blood, as well as the venous return, so that “dirty” blood can be filtered of bi-products and toxins.

Likewise, we need to have a means of distribution of the energy that animates the body.  We have the primary chakras, the secondary chakras and the superconductor of our neurological system.

Now, here is my suggestion for being grounded, and in touch with Mother Earth.

  • Sit with your feet flat on the floor.
  • Close your eyes and bring your attention to the arch of your feet.
  • Imagine at the arch of your feet you could see what looks like the closed shutter of a camera lens.
  • Envision those camera lenses slowly being to dilate.
  • Rather than snapping shut, the lens should stay open.
  • Imagine that the tips of your fingers are open as if they were straws.
  • Imagine the tips of your toes open as if they were straws.

Begin to pay attention to the sensations that you feel in your body.  Pay close attention.

You may begin to feel some tingling, warmth, lightness or heaviness.  Energy is moving along your neurological system, stimulating the nerve endings and causing a tingling sensation.

The warmth is caused by the higher frequency of energy that is moving in the body.  Recall from basic science that anything that moves creates friction, and friction creates heat, and heat creates what is called vasodilatation…. plump vessels, that allow for more oxygenated blood to reach your tissues.  Healthy blood is the base of a healthy body.

Now, practice opening the chakras on the arches of your feet throughout your day.  As often as you think of it, and you will be surprised how wonderful you begin to feel.

I will write more later about the importance of grounding as it relates to health and healing. But in the meantime, stay grounded, stay healthy and begin to enjoy your life more fully.
